  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

I remember when my father was an iceman. Us kids used to jump up on the truck to get pieces of ice to chew on, it tasted a little like wood cause the truck body was wood. and I remember our own ice box.
I remember going to the 1939 New York worlds fair, and was amazed when I saw an escalator. I remember Mayor LaGuardia reading the comics, on the radio. Coffee was a nickel, Rumble seats in cars we rode in em,
I remember my aunt telling me Wendell Wilkie would be the next president!

Does anyone remember when you pulled into a gas station and your car ran over what looked like a hose and it made a dinging noise inside the building and an attendant would come out and pump gas for you?

Pump your gas, wash the windshield, check the oil and tire pressure. When you weren't looking he might disconnect a spark-plug cable so you'd think your car needed service which his buddy in the gas station a mile or so away would conclude you had a bad valve!

The little town my mom lives in still has a full service gas station on the main street, costs a bit more but they discount for older people and the disabled, every Veterans day/ 4th of July/ and all of that they offer free gas to service members.

Does anyone remember rationing, gas and sugar and meat. Remember each family got a booklet of ration cards. Cars had a letter on the windshield for gas. Black out, you had to turn all your lights out! Air raid Warden s would go around and write you up if you didn't!

There were no rationing in ' 72 but there were gas shortages & lines at the gas stations.

Push button tranny? I remember seeing the old floor pedal starter on used pick-up trucks. It's the round pedal to the right of the gas pedal..

I was around that age too ( I can't remember that part for certain ), We used to go down to the local river and drive along the public access tracks. I should probably note that this was in the late 80's, my Dad rebuilt and restored the truck from a wrecked one that he found on a farm.

I grew up on a farm and we rode on the tractors or in the trailer behind. We roamed wild through the fields among the farm animals, pulled carrots from the field and ate them after knocking the soil off, climbed trees (and fell out of them) . Got sound advice from Mothers "If you fall out of that tree and break your leg, don't come running to me for help!"

I remember party lines. In a party line two households would share one telephone line. This made it possible for someone in one household to listen into conversations on the other household.

My grandmother told me about a time when she was talking to a friend on the telephone. The friend was about to tell her something personal. My grandmother said, "You better not say anything personal. My neighbor sometimes listens in."

At this point my grandmother's neighbor said, "Why Mrs. [my grandmother's last name] I do not!"

I remember watching the Apollo space landings on a small black and white TV... Happy 50th on Apollo 11's landing, NASA!

Yeah , we all took half a day off (from farm) went home and fired up the power plant (didn't have 24/7 power , only ran it morning n evening mostly) and watched the moon landing .
The first live TV from space here , I think.
B&W of course , and being beyond the theoretical limit of TV reception then , was pretty snowy n scratchy ,
      but amazing.
(we only got any TV because an electrician friend knew it could bounce off the cliff opposite the house , and bought one out to try.
It worked , but for years vsiters would inform us our TV aerial was pointing the wrong way :) not knowing it was recieving the signal on the bounce back.

      Just remembered:
some years later they built a 200 foot aerial tower on the mountain our signal came from , and that gave us direct signal , with a much improved picture.

Visited family in Buckfield, Maine. There were horse racks (for tying up you horse and wagon) and water trough in front of the General Store. All the streets were dirt (none were paved). No-one locked their doors and hunting was necessary if you wanted meat. Loved the hunting (learned how to shoot, true rifle sights, make bullets, dress some animals, etc.). For a true city kid this was magic!

I am not near as old as most of y'all but did grow up in a town that was stuck 50 years in the past. We all had gun racks in our trucks, knives on our belts or at least in our pockets, and no one locked their doors. But then there no one went hungry or without because everyone was connected, we all knew each other. The idea of letting any one family fail was a failure for the community as a whole. We would leave the house in the summer for 2 months unlocked and come home to a mown lawn and the mail being waiting at the neighbors.

I remember my brother giving me a dollar to go to the corner store and buy him a pack of Marlboros. He let me keep the change.
Tells you how long ago it was. A kid could just walk into a store and buy a pack of cigarettes and there would be enough change from a dollar for me to buy a Coke and a couple of candy bars.
BTW, does Bazooka Joe bubble gum still come with a comic?

I remember when there was one phone in the house, it was attached to a cord on the wall and it was a privilege to use it.

I remember when unleaded gas was something new.

I remember when summers seem to last for a long time....

We never had a phone , ever ,
but I remember visiting friends where they could ,
and it was a wooden box on the wall ,
with a handle on the side
      you turned quickly ,
      to wake the operator
to get them to wake whoever you wanted to talk to ,
and then connect you to them.

I had one little old lady who insisted on paying me each week even though I kept telling her that she was pre-paid for the year.
      And Christmas tips were awesome!

      Pedal bike(s).
      Wore out 3 of them.

      Doesn't pay shit.
We bought our papers at a discount and paid the bill once a month.

We had to collect from our customers, and thats when Shooter learned there are no Saturdays (I promise I'll pay you Saturday). And when people moved they never ever settled the bill or even canceled their subscription. A route with 100 subscribers would pay $30 IF everyone paid their bill.
      They never did.
      Some months Shooter made nuthin.

    I remember our "radio room"
at the end of the veranda , with nothing much but a couple of Morse keys and telegram pads.

Then one day , pa had just got home , and suddenly there was this metal box with dials n wires n things , and things called headphones , and they could talk to someone somewhere else.

Turned out it was an old war surplus ZC1

Eventually I became postmaster (we were a private post office , due to our isolation)
and the radio was a very upgraded and more powerful thing ,
but still in that original ZC1 case , on the same ZC1 chassis , with an inverter under the table , so we could communicate in any conditions , as long as we could connect 12volts..
    Amazing.
Now I can visit that spot , and talk to almost anyone anywhere in the world , on this device.

(we had a box full of valves , some spare fuses , and a box full of frequency crystals , and that was all we needed to maintain it.
    The
crystals being in case there was any difficulty on a particular frequency , we could put another in to try , or in an emergency , put in a special one for special purposes . Each frequency having a designated purpose use.
Contact , chat , emergency , ship to ship , ship to shore , post office , local reporting etc
2045 and 1 I forgot, 2182 , 2196 , and 2172 being the regulars , all interchangeable , with one other spot to put in an extra.
